TUMBLER RIDGE, BC — A mass shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in northern British Columbia on Tuesday afternoon left multiple victims dead and at least 27 others injured, Canadian authorities said.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police officers were called to the remote school shortly after 1:20 p.m. local time following reports of an active shooter at the site, prompting an immediate lockdown and emergency response.

Investigators found seven people dead inside the school and one additional victim who died while being transported to a hospital; two more bodies were later discovered at a residence in the community that police believe is connected to the shooting.

The individual believed to be responsible was found deceased at the school from an apparent self-inflicted injury, and officers said there is no ongoing threat to the public.

At least 27 people were wounded in the attack, with a number of victims transported to regional medical centers; two were reported to be in serious or life-threatening condition.

Premier David Eby and national leaders offered condolences to the victims’ families and pledged support to the affected community as investigators with the RCMP continue their inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the shootings.
