FORT WORTH, Texas — Two Fort Worth firefighters were hospitalized with burn injuries Monday night after a wind-driven house fire in south Fort Worth triggered a mayday call, according to the Fort Worth Fire Department.
Crews were dispatched to a home in the 7600 block of Crowley Road around 10:40 p.m. and arrived in less than five minutes to find flames already coming from the second story, the department said in a news release. Firefighters operating on the second floor were met by a sudden burst of heat and flames, fueled by wind gusts of up to 25 mph, prompting a mayday call followed by a second alarm.
A fire crew with specialized training in rescuing firefighters from burning buildings was nearby and responded to the scene, officials told WFAA-TV. The crew extracted the injured firefighters in less than 10 minutes.
Three adults were displaced by the fire, and the American Red Cross is assisting them with immediate needs. The injured firefighters were transported to local hospitals in stable condition. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
In a separate incident, multiple families were displaced and one firefighter was treated for smoke inhalation during a three-alarm apartment fire in west Fort Worth early Tuesday morning.
