FLINT, Mich. — Two Flint fire stations remain temporarily closed as the city completes “long overdue” kitchen renovations addressing mold and asbestos issues, according to a city news release.
Firefighters assigned to Stations 6 and 8 have been temporarily reassigned to Station 1 downtown and Station 5 on Western Road while the work continues. Fire Chief Theron Wiggins said the closures have not affected response times.
The Flint City Council approved $163,964 for the renovations in May, covering ceiling and drywall work, painting and countertops. Work by Siwek Construction Company began July 1, at the start of the city’s 2026-27 fiscal year.
Staffing at the Flint Fire Department has grown from 68 to 92 firefighters since Wiggins took over as chief in 2022, according to the city. Twenty additional recruits are set to enter the fire academy in January. “The Flint Fire Department is stronger today, and we are continuing to build for the future,” Wiggins said in a statement. “Our firefighters are working hard every day to serve this community, and the numbers show the level of service they are providing.”
Since January, Flint has responded to 2,458 fire calls with an average response time of about four minutes. “When someone calls 911, they need to know help is coming quickly. Our firefighters are answering that call every day,” Wiggins said. The department’s ambulance service has made more than 3,500 runs so far this year.
