LONDONDERRY, N.H. — A Londonderry fire lieutenant suffered a broken leg and minor burns while searching a burning home for residents he believed might still be trapped inside, according to the Professional Fire Fighters of Londonderry Local 3160 and WMUR.

The Londonderry Fire Department responded to the fire on Rockingham Road at approximately 10 p.m. Oct. 2. Lt. Mike England entered the home out of concern that people remained inside before he was ultimately driven out by the fire, according to WMUR. All five residents who had been in the home at the time of the fire had already escaped safely.

Battalion Chief Hallowell said England did not initially realize he had been injured and went back inside to continue fighting the fire. England has since been released from the hospital and described himself as the “luckiest unlucky guy,” given the circumstances of his injuries.

No other injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
