More than 200 first responders went to the home in Sunset Park. Kevin Woods, the department’s chief of fire operations, said crews arrived to find fire on every floor, with flames coming out of every window and meeting firefighters at the front door.

Firefighters rescued four people, entering through a rear door to reach two who were trapped behind window bars, Woods said. The fire was brought under control in about three hours.

Four people died at the scene. Two others with critical injuries were taken to a hospital, where they were pronounced dead. Four more people suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Three firefighters had minor injuries. Eight neighbors were displaced and taken to hotels.

Fire marshals are investigating. They found a lithium-ion battery at the scene, but the department said it is unknown whether it was connected to the cause.

“This was a devastating fire,” Mayor Zohran Mamdani said at a news conference. He said it will take a long time for the neighborhood to mourn those lost and to recover. The names of the dead and injured have not been released.
